Learning Something New

Dec 16, 2023

My student and friend, Karen Murphy, shared with the Wednesday classes a bit of Art History. She told us about Wassily Kandinsky, who was an art theorist, and widely considered the “father of abstraction.”

"Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian artist known for his artistic theories and innovation. He viewed art as a spiritual vehicle and the artist as a prophet. Kandinsky was the first known and recorded European artist to create fully abstract artworks. This would change the trajectory of Modern Art and open possibilities in the art world for the rest of time."

Here is one of his most famous paintings.

So, we gave it a whirl. It was fun letting go of the reality of form and light. We did our own take on circles and color.

Another of my students, Roxanne, used color and shape to celebrate the colors she saw in a lily in her garden. I was so fortunate to receive this painting in our class holiday exchange!

This is an especially good lesson for the little ones. If you get a chance to have some creative fun with your family and friends as they come and go this holiday season, I would encourage you to try this yourself! We all enjoyed learning about Kandinsky and trying it out for a while.

Hope this was informative for you and helps you “celebrate” all the art forms life has to offer.
