A Sister’s Stroll

Recently, my sister came and spent some time with me in my studio. She took many photos, and I asked her to share them with you. It was interesting to see Stormwater from someone else’s point of view. Situated smack dab in the middle of downtown Columbia, SC, it is a thriving little oasis. Take a look.

THE LABORER by MIKE WSOL

When driving up to Stormwater, you will pass this very large sculpture, The Laborer, by Mike Wsol. Ever wonder what it was about? I linked him (above) and you can check out his work. Also when you look at it straight on, you realize there are steps to go up inside. Here’s what it looks like in there. My sister, Christina Laffey, got some photos for us to see it.

My sister also got this cool video of a juvenile red-tailed hawk eating a meal in our little oasis in the middle of downtown Columbia, SC. (Trigger warning / not for the squeamish.)

    Aww that’s really cool Michel!!! I really enjoyed my walk!! I had no idea all of the exciting things to see were back there. I normally spend my time perusing what’s IN the studio! Now I know how cool and relaxing/refreshing it is ALL around Stormwater! <3

    Oh my goodness! I love Tina’s perspective!! That hawk was rather busy! Beautiful things outdoors!
    I would be remiss if I did not remark about your Robert! It is probably my most favorite! I have never been a fan of feet, but I must say his are adorable! Hahaha

    So very nice of Tina to take time out from her busy schedule to spend time with her “favorite” sister…..Can’t believe that she was able to get so close to the hawk….just awesome! Stormwater is a treasure…..Lots of creativity there.

Consistent blog posting took a hit; missed 3 weeks! My sincere apologies. My painting had me under its spell. This painting is one that has long been on my mind and in my “to be painted” file. I kept thinking it would be finished for the week’s blog post, but it wasn’t. But it is ready for you now…. “The Stitches we Know,” oil, 24x30 - Collection of the Artist The subject of the painting is my niece, Bek (a/k/a Rebekah). She was taking down her childhood room and is transitioning to her adult life. I found it poignant that her elementary days are represented and the family’s ancestral home is there as well with the picture of the widow’s walk. There are hints to her siblings and even the family’s favorite meal her Mama makes. The photo was taken as a message to me. She is holding up a granny square I crocheted for her (my stitches) while wearing a t-shirt with her “Stitch” on it. We know and think different things, but we share them with each other. So, as you can see this painting brings up many things to my heart and mind. But now dear viewer, I leave it to you. Please enjoy it however you wish. "Helios," 48x24, oil on canvas. Minor revisions gave this painting a little more drama. Am I finished? I'll look at it this week and decide.
